Stephanie - I agree with you. Early intervention is the key to tackling any issues in life. There's nothing wrong with getting help for a child. My 16-month old daughter had a speech evaluation done nearly 2 weeks ago because she wasn't saying a single word at her 12-month and 15-month checkups. It's been assessed that she needs speech therapy 2x/week and I'm all for it. Any professional help and advice I can get to steer my daughter in the right direction will be very much appreciated.

My son is currently in speech therapy through the school system, although he did start with the county's Early Intervention program when he was younger. It's been going really well.

My sister told me about someone she knows who refused Early Intervention speech therapy because she felt it labeled her child as having something wrong. I really feel for that child! There's nothing wrong with getting help when your child needs it. There's nothing wrong with my son. He has trouble speaking clearly, but his comprehension tested at the 5 year level when he was 3. Sometimes one skill just develops later. The therapy has helped his confidence and even helped us find a friend for him to play with.

@Colleen, I'm glad you ended up finding a good therapist. I think that is the hardest part...parents are afraid to replace the therapist.

@Melissa, good luck with your consultation tomorrow! I agree...rolling at her adjusted age of 8 weeks is pretty good! I hope EI helps catch her up to her peers quickly!! :D

We have our first consultation tomorrow for Addie. Being a preemie, she will obviously be delayed according to her birthdate. (Although she did roll from her belly to her back several times this weekend... pretty advanced for an "eight-week" old; more like her true five-month age!)

There is a chance she has hip dysplasia as well, but ortho hasn't made a diagnosis yet.

Zoe received physical therapy through Early Intervention. She was born with bi-lateral hip dysplasia and at 6 months was evaluated and was very delayed with her gross motor skills. We had a VERY negative experience with one therapist and then a truly amazing experience with her replacement.
