@Amy - So glad to hear that your youngest is enjoying his toothbrush. A great start! As to your question, it depends on the dentist's philosophy. My boss usually advised parents to wait until the child is three unless, of course, there's an immediate dental concern, or the kid just can't wait to hop in the dental chair like big brother or sister! Most children younger than that won't let you clean their teeth, their mouths are too small (or they're too wiggly!) to take good x-rays, etc. The first appointment should be very relaxed and "see-as-you-go;" some kids will do the whole nine yards with the cleaning and fluoride and x-rays, some will only allow a quick look in their mouth.

@Maurika - Glad you like the blog! I've heard that xylitol has bacteria-inhibiting properties that make it much safer for teeth, but so far I've only seen it in chewing gum. The platypus flossers are great, and work especially well for little kids who don't have the hand-eye coordination to floss the traditional way. Thanks for bringing those two things up!

@sharon: Amazing BLOG! As a mom of four this is my newest bookmark! I have 2 things to share if I might: xylitol for teeth, you can get toothpaste, candies, etc and it is GOOD for your teeth - not harmful when swallowed (unlike flouride) and tastes delish! also for braces and kids that won't floss: platypus flosser. my teenagers are in braces, and my 3 and 1 year old love xylitol. tooth hygiene is SO important!!!

thanks for the great blogging! m

We've been big on brushing early, and twice a day. Our little actually LOVES to brush his teeth (I'm guessing the baby toothpaste is yummy!).
But they have yet to see a dentist. What age is recommended they go? And what happens at that first appointment?

@imelda - that's why I chose it! He looked so happy sitting in that chair getting his x-rays done; it was perfect.
