Are Your Kids Home Because of the Swine Flu?

I have heard of many schools here in San Antonio, Austin, and Houston that are closed, because of the swine flu. Are you at home with kids, because their school is closed?

Check out these posts about what to do with your kids while they are at home:

Yesterday my friend, Natalie, took her 3 year old son and 8 month old girl to the doctor’s office. They started taking the toys out of the waiting room just as her son was playing with them. When they spoke with the doctor they found out that there had been a confirmed case of Swine Flu in their office that morning. Natalie and her kids have been exposed to the virus.  You should check out Natalie’s husband’s political take on the virus here.

Are you afraid of the virus? Is it really a pandemic if only 50 people in the US are infected? Are you washing your hands more often?

So, I’m still a little confused… what makes swine flu so much more dangerous than the “regular” flu (which is a misnomer by the way b/c every year there are several strains of the flu virus floating around)? Is it more contagious? More likely to be fatal? Do people realize that thousands of Americans die every year from “flu-related complications”? I’m sorry, but I fail to see how this strain is so much more deadly than any other kind.

On another note, thanks for the links Amanda! My son is home today (Israel’s Independence Day) and Friday (Labor Day), so we need some good activities to keep us busy!

Sharon, I think it is because no one has any immunity to that particular strain which means that more people than normal would/could die from it if it becomes pandemic. It would be similar to the Spanish Flu than went around in 1918. And the fact that there is not any vaccine for that strain would contribute to more cases of illness.

Thanks, Amelia, for spelling it out! I was wondering myself the same thing.
I’ll be glad when this whole thing passes.

Thanks for the info Amelia! It seems like every day there’s a new news story, and since the WHO is freaking out, it has to be a big deal, but nothing I’ve read has said why. It really bugs me. there was a case reported in Israel a couple of days ago, did you hear?
