Christmas Movies: What Is Your Family’s Classic?

by Dawn on December 19, 2008

One of the best things about the Christmas season is watching classic Christmas movies.  My husband’s favorite is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.  My favorites are It’s A Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story.  I just realized that they all have a long-suffering wife/mother figure.  Something about the stress of the holidays, huh?  Poor Ellen Griswold is always running around, simultaneously trying to support Clark while cleaning up his messes.  Mary Bailey has four little ones to look after, and a husband who’s miserable.  (Remember the scene where he yells at the kids’ teacher on the phone?)  And Ralphie’s mom is a classic representation of motherhood: always making dinner, trying to keep the Old Man happy, and lovingly raising two boys.  She’s my favorite.

What movie does your family watch every Christmas?

Here’s one of my favorite scenes from A Christmas Story, re-cut for some added laughs.

Elf. Love it! Makes me laugh every time. I like all the other ones too but I always look forward to watching Elf.

White Christmas! Ever since I was a kid we’d sit and watch that movie at Christmas time. I love Bing Crosby’s voice and all the musical scenes. And the snow. Ahhh.

I am with Jenny, it is a ‘White Christmas’ for me. Also, ‘Love Actually’! As a kid i LOVED ‘Home Alone.’ I still know every single word to that movie. ‘You’ve Got Mail’ is kinda Christmas-y and I watch that almost every Christmas too. We already watched Elf while I decorated the tree and Daniel played World of Warcraft. Ha!

We watch Elf every year when we decorate the tree (“Hi Mr. Narwhal…). It makes us laugh every time. We also try to squeeze in White Christmas, The Santa Claus (1 and/or 2), Love Actually, It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story sometime during the holidays and the early New Year.

The other movies I watch every Christmas are:
    The Family Stone (check!)
    The Holiday
    Something’s Gotta Give (check!)
    Elf
    Love Actually (check!)
    You’ve Got Mail (check!)

and though I don’t have it, While You Were Sleeping is a perfect Christmastime movie. It was so bizarre that that one came out in summertime.

What, no “Merry Christmas Charlie Brown?” Or “A Christmas Carol?” Those are probably two of my favorites, and I watch them EVERY year. Linus’ monologue at the end of CB gets me all teary every time.

I love the old animated ones. My absolute favorite is Year Without a Santa Claus because of the Heat Miser and Freeze Miser. They are a Hoot!!

My next favorite is the Muppet Christmas Carol. I love the music in that movie.

Oh yeah….my kids like these too. LOL

We watch Miracle on 34th Street and It’s a Wonderful Life. The classics are the best, but I love Elf too.

It’s not Christmas without Clark W. Griswold. We decorate our tree to the backdrop of “save the neck for me Clark!” every year.

Just because you mentioned it Dawn, I’ll be watching You’ve Got Mail today, and maybe renting the others!

My kids are still little, so we watch Rudolph, Frosty, & Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town. Today, I think we’ll try Alvin & the Chipmunks.
